San Francisco 49ers: Niners would need first-round pick to listen to Jimmy Garoppolo offers

The San Francisco 49ers continue to be the center of NFL rumor after negotiating to acquire the No.3 pick in the 2021 NFL Draft from the Miami Dolphins.

Not only are the talks focused on which quarterback the Niners will pick in third, there are still plenty of rumors about what the team will do with outgoing starter Jimmy Garoppolo.

During their recent media availability, general manager John Lynch and head coach Kyle Shanahan said they plan to keep Garoppolo for next season. Still, Shanahan didn’t completely shut the door when moving Jimmy G.

“Now if someone wanted something for that and it can improve your team in a lot of other ways, you listen to that, but it also depends on how good you feel for that rookie,” Shanahan admitted. . “We’re not there yet and chances are, we probably won’t be. That’s why we’re happy that we don’t have to be that way. We have a guy here who we know we can win with, a guy that our players love, that we love and we are delighted to have him this year and we are delighted to have a hell of a quarterback right behind. teaching him for the time being.

Sports Illustrated’s Alber Breer was asked what kind of compensation the 49ers were looking for in a potential trade for Garoppolo in his recent mailbag and had this to say.

I’ve been told that, yes, it would take a first-round pick for the Niners to listen at this point, which of course would be good for San Francisco after giving up their firsts in 2022 and 23 to go from No 12 to 3. This, of course, is subject to change. Maybe a veteran stopgap that they see as comparable to Garoppolo could come, and then they would be motivated to move him (I don’t know who it would be). Maybe the rookie will arrive and wow everyone over the summer, and the Niners will want to play him.

Breer later points out that San Francisco is in no rush to move Garoppolo, especially with a roster good enough to fight for a Super Bowl. The Niners have re-signed several key free agents, some of them for one-year contracts, indicating the front office thinks they can win now.

Garoppolo’s trade before or in the draft will put tremendous pressure on the incoming rookie to produce immediately. By keeping Garoppolo, the rookie QB will have time to learn Shanahan’s system and develop his skills to prepare for the starting role in 2022.

But if a team comes up with a first-round selection for Jimmy G, it would be difficult for Shanahan and Lynch to say no. They would be able to pick up one of the first players they sent to the Dolphins and add another important piece that can help both in the short and long term.

There are so many possibilities that could happen by September. If the rookie QB comes in and lights up training camp, then the 49ers would be much more open to trading Garoppolo.

If Garoppolo outshines the rookie ahead of the season and leads the team to a deep playoff series or a Super Bowl title, San Francisco will be able to try and maximize the return in any trade over the next season. .

With the lineup built as is and the 49ers looking confident they can win a championship next season, would you trade Garoppolo for a first or second round pick before or in the draft?
