Gary Sanchez’s Redemption Tour is underway on opening day.

The Yankees wide receiver, coming off a brutal 2020, crushed a two-run home run in his regular-season first at bat on Thursday, taking Blue Jays starter Hyun Jin Ryu to Yankee Stadium.

Sanchez’s first home run of the season came on a 91 mph fastball from Ryu, which Sanchez lit and drove 407 feet down the left court. This gave the Yankees a 2-1 lead in the second inning.

Sanchez had made a home run in his second spring training game, after an offseason that drew praise from the Yankees for the work he did both offensively and defensively.

The fact that he was in the starting lineup on Thursday was remarkable, catching Gerrit Cole for the first time in a game that mattered since Kyle Higashioka replaced him as Cole’s personal wide receiver last September.
