Samsung’s first UWB tracker, the SmartTag Plus, seems almost here

Samsung announced its Galaxy SmartTag line of object trackers in January, and at the time it said that the high-end SmartTag Plus, featuring ultra-wideband (UWB) technology that enables more precise tracking of data. ‘an article related to you that Bluetooth would. will be released later this year. Now, however, there are hints that the SmartTag Plus could be released soon, possibly as early as April 12.

Perhaps the most telling clue to the imminent arrival of the SmartTag Plus is that retailer B&H Photo already has the black model of the device available for pre-order, with “expected availability” on April 12. Here’s a link to the B&H listing if you’d like to try pre-ordering a SmartTag Plus for yourself. But since Samsung has yet to share this date itself, it is possible that B&H may change this scheduled date if it is not exact.

The follow-up to upcoming articles also appeared in Federal Communications Commission documents released on Wednesday. This may indicate that a product will be available for sale in the near future, but it is not a guarantee.

Samsung isn’t the only company interested in UWB technology. There are rumors that Apple has long been working on its own UWB-equipped object tracking tool, so-called AirTags, and Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo said in January that Apple plans to release them this year. Tile would also prepare its own article tracking tool with UWB.

Apple has also built its U1 chip which activates UWB in the iPhone 11 and 12 series and even in the Apple Watch Series 6, but so far it hasn’t used the technology much except for a more precise AirDrop. The U1 chip will also allow BMW iX owners to wirelessly unlock their cars when the vehicle releases later this year in Europe.
