Sony has just announced, in a very discreet way, that its next Xperia event will take place on April 14 (via Dstiff life). The news comes from the Xperia YouTube channel banner, where it says a new product announcement will take place at 4:30 p.m. Japan Standard Time – i.e. 3:30 a.m. EST or 12:30 p.m. PT (if you feel like it). to burn midnight oil to watch live).

The banner doesn’t give any real clue as to what will be announced, but there have been a few rumors circulating – one about a new flagship, the Xperia 1 III, and the other about the return of the Xperia Compact, which could end up being an Android Answer to the iPhone Mini.

It should be noted that there are other rumors that mention new versions of the Xperia 5 and 10, leaving the Compact entirely aside. But pretty much all rumors indicate that we’ll see a new entry in the flagship Xperia 1 line. Leaks indicate that the 1 III will have a periscope zoom lens, and Techradar recently released what could be the full specs. This is mainly what you would expect from a flagship Android phone: Snapdragon 888, 12GB of memory, 5G and a 4K 120Hz display.

It’s probably a safe bet that if there is only one phone advertised (which is suggested by the singular “product” in the Sony image), the Xperia 1 III would be – line 1 appears to be on an annual cycle. The Compact is much more of a wildcard – the last time Sony released a ‘Compact’ branded phone was in 2018, although it uses the word to market the Xperia 5 II, with its 6.1-inch display, which is roughly the same size. as iPhone 12 Pro or Galaxy S21. Rumors for a 2021 version of the Compact say it will have a 5.5-inch screen, which is only a tiny bit larger than the screen of an iPhone Mini.

Both potential phones are rumored to be equipped with headphone jacks. As for what we’ll actually see that day, only time will tell – but luckily, not much is left.
