In an interview with Deadline, Dane explained how his Grey’s the return has arrived. He took us behind the scenes of filming the beach scenes with Pompeo (in person) and Leigh (via Vancouver Green Screen where she films Super girl), sharing her take on Mark and Lexie’s relationship status and the duo’s central role in giving Meredith the strength to hold on to life when taken off the fan. He also spoke of the remarkable longevity of Grey’s Anatomy and his return to production on his current series, HBO’s Euphoria.
DEADLINE: When and how were you approached to return to Grey’s Anatomy?
ERIC DANE: I was in Shanghai, shooting a movie, a Chinese production for this market, a historical play, and Krista reached out to me and said, “Hey, I want to talk to you about something , let me know when you have a day. ”I said,“ Well, I’m in Shanghai, China right now, let’s talk about it as soon as I get back. ”I don’t remember the timeline; I know I was in Shanghai in August. She explained to me what was going on in the story, and she said, “We want to put Mark Sloan on the beach with Lexie Gray.”
DEADLINE: What was your reaction? Did you like the idea?
DANISH: Yeah, I thought that was a great idea. I thought it made sense, given the circumstances.
DEADLINE: What do you mean?
DANISH: I mean, if you ever want to bring Mark Sloan back, I guess with Meredith in a coma, that’s a good way for her to see him. So it wasn’t a hard sell, and it made sense.

DEADLINE: Tell me about the shooting of your scenes. You have to spend time with Ellen, the team. How did it get back to the character, revisiting your past and reuniting with old friends?
DANISH: It was as if I had never left. It was a great day at the beach. It was great to see some of the familiar faces and the same crew members, and we didn’t skip a beat. I love these people. I spent a lot of my life with these people, I would do just about anything for them.
DEADLINE: What have you and Ellen discussing intermediate takes?
DANISH: Masks, Covid. Haven’t seen Chyler in a while, but Ellen I keep in touch with, and how are the kids doing? Children are good. Banalities. There wasn’t a lot of time between takes because of the protocols and the way we had to put them in place. So once we left it was almost like a runaway train.
DEADLINE: And was it easy to get back into character?
DANISH: Yes. I mean, look, I made Mark Sloan. It wasn’t that hard for me to find my character again.
DEADLINE: What did you think of the fact that Mark and Lexie played such an important role in giving Meredith a will to live and a reason to fight as she soon after began to breathe on her own?
DANISH: Well, Mark Sloan and Lexie Gray are built into the DNA of this show, and also literally Lexie and Meredith share the same DNA. So, I think there is connectivity there and reminds him that, gone but not forgotten, we’re still here if you need us, and it’s too early for you to stay on the beach.
DEADLINE: And there was something heartwarming, I’m sure, reassuring you fans that Mark is fine …
DANISH: Sure. Absolutely. You see that everyone is doing well and is happy; it allows you to want to come back for something.
DEADLINE: … And that Mark also watches over his daughter.
DANISH: Yes. Whether she’s listening to me or not, you always have someone watching you. I lost my father at a very young age and I feel like he is watching over me in some way.
DEADLINE: When Meredith asked if Mark and Lexie were together, you said “On your beach we are.” What do you think about this? Does this mean that they are happy together in our imaginations?
DANISH: I didn’t dig too deep into this. I kind of took it like, not in your imagination but the way you see it in your subconscious, wherever you are right now, whatever state you are in, in that coma, that dream fever, whatever, I guess it’s [Meredith’s] projection of perfection. Mark and Lexie are together forever, and I’m sure Mark and Lexie aren’t too disappointed either.
DEADLINE: What is your take on Mark and Lexie, how do you think their story continues in the afterlife?
DANISH: Mark would have found Lexie. He would have finally found her.
DEADLINE: Since you’ve been Gone Grey’s Anatomy, you made a successful series, The last boat, which ran for five seasons, and now you’re on a hit second series, Euphoria. Meanwhile, Grey’s Anatomy is still in progress. How do you explain the longevity of this show which has continued to be strong for 17 seasons?
DANISH: Well, I think there are a lot of factors, but basically it’s just a great show. People connect with the characters on this show. He seemed to have found a whole new generation of viewers. The shows will usually grow with a generation, an audience, and eventually that audience will overtake that show or move on. But with Grey’s, There has always been an alchemy in this casting, a dynamic, a chemistry that makes people appear. The writing is good. Krista, Shonda [Rhimes], Betsy [Beers] and now Debbie Allen’s executive producing the show. They’re so good at understanding the tone of this show and finding characters that people are going to invest in, and what that translates into season 17.
DEADLINE: Is there anything missing Gray?
DANISH: Well, I have maintained contact with many of the cast members. One answer someone would give you, if they hadn’t, would have been that I would have missed people, but I’m still friends with them all. So there was really nothing to miss.
DEADLINE: Will you come back to production on Euphoria soon?
DANISH: In mid-April. We actually started Season 2. I think I won’t start filming for a few weeks, but we are. I’m sure we’ll post this ASAP. We have set the bar very high. I am very proud of this show, everyone involved is very proud of this show.
