Marvel video tackles Baron Zemo’s comic book origins

A video shared by Marvel Entertainment delves into the comic book history of The Falcon and the Winter Soldier’s Baron Zemo.

A new video shared by Marvel offers a crash course in the comic book history of Baron Zemo, one of the key players in Marvel Studios’ ongoing Disney + original series The Falcon and the Winter Soldier.

Hosted by Langston Belton, the video was uploaded to Marvel Entertainment’s official YouTube channel. It opens by explaining the history of the name Baron Zemo, which is “a title of German nobility passed down through 13 generations of no-goodniks”.

Created by Stan Lee and Jack Kirby, Marvel Comics’ original Baron Zemo – Dr. Heinrich Zemo – made his first full appearance in 1964. Avengers # 6 following a partial appearance in issue 4. The 12th member of the Baron Zemo line, Heinrich was the Nazi’s foremost scientist during WWII, working alongside Baron Wolfgang von Strucker of HYDRA.

Created by Roy Thomas, Tony Isabella and Sal Buscema, Heinrich’s son – Helmut Zemo – first appeared as the villainous Phoenix in 1973. Captain America # 168, swearing revenge on Cap for his father’s death. Helmut made his first full appearance as the new Baron Zemo in 1982 Captain America # 276 after making an appearance in issue 275. He then appropriated the role of Citizen V in 1997 The Incredible Hulk # 449 to become the leader of the Thunderbolts.

Played by Daniel Brühl, a heavily modified version of Helmut Zemo was introduced to the Marvel Cinematic Universe in 2016. Captain America: Civil War. In the MCU, Zemo is a former special ops soldier from Sokovia whose family is revealed to have perished in the events of Avengers: Age of Ultron, causing him to swear revenge on the Avengers. Zemo managed to fracture the superhero team by accusing Steve Rogers’ best friend, Bucky Barnes, of bombing the United Nations. Zemo also reveals that as a brainwashed Winter Soldier, Bucky murdered Tony Stark’s parents.

Brühl returns to his role as Baron Helmut Zemo in The Falcon and the Winter Soldier, and even dons the signature mask of the character from the comics. Located after the events of Avengers: Endgame, the Disney + series follows Sam Wilson and Bucky Barnes on a globe-trotting adventure as they battle the legacy of Captain America. The Falcon and the Winter Soldier premiered on March 19 and is currently halfway through its six-episode series.
