Johnson, 31, faces charges of first degree murder in the shooting. He has a criminal background including assault and a charge of possession of weapons.
He appeared in Arapahoe County Court on Tuesday morning.
Cunningham played the cornerback and wide receiver at the University of Colorado from 1992 to 1995. He also had a brief professional career in the NFL with the Seattle Seahawks. He was deputy director of Hinkley High School.
On Sunday morning, around 9:20 am, a passerby called 911 to announce that gunshots had been fired at the sports fields behind Eaglecrest High School.
The incident began as a dispute between Cunningham and Johnson over parking in their neighborhood, according to Arapahoe County Sheriff's Office spokeswoman Deborah Sherman.
At one point, police reported that Johnson had received a firearm and shot Cunningham several times. He then called the police to go and went home a few blocks away.
