CULVER, Ore. (KTVZ) – A new wildfire broke out on Sunday afternoon about 10 miles southwest of Culver and reached about 300 acres within hours, creating a plume of black smoke visible for many miles as crews and tankers rushed in and some nearby areas were evacuated, others put on alert and roads closed.
A smaller fire was also being fought near La Pine and was also actively burning in hot, dry weather.
Incident 558, named Grandview Fire, was reported around 1:30 p.m. in the Grandview area of Jefferson County, west of Crooked River Ranch and south of the Three Rivers Subdivision. By 5:30 p.m., the “very active” had burned about 300 acres and were heading south-southwest, Oregon Forestry Department spokeswoman Christie Shaw said.
The fire was burning on the Crooked River National Grassland and private land protected by the ODF, Shaw said.
SEAT planes (single-engine tankers) and large tankers were busy dropping their loads and returning to the fire, as engine crews worked to establish lines, Shaw said. More planes were arriving from nearby dispatch centers in support.
Jefferson County Sheriff Marc Heckathorn said properties along Geneva Road and Tye Flat were on a Level 3 Evacuation Order (GO NOW) and residents were evacuated in late afternoon. Wilt Road and Geneva Road between Sisters and Three Rivers are closed, he said.
Crooked River Ranch, Trois Rivières. Camp Sherman and Cove Palisades State Park “are not subject to any evacuation orders and are open,” Heckathorn said.
Engine crews were en route with three single-engine tankers (SEATs), one Type 3 helicopter and two ordered tankers. A Type 3 crew was called in to catch the fire, Shaw said.
Shaw said the fire started near the Geneva and Geneva 2 fire sites several years ago. “We have had many fires in this region,” she said.
Crooked River Ranch Fire & Rescue told residents via Facebook that while the smoke was very visible from the blaze west of the ranch and north of Sisters, it does not threaten the ranch.
Meanwhile, in the La Pine area, another new fire, Incident 559, broke out on Sunday afternoon, south of Rosland Road, near Finley Butte.
Shaw said he had grown to over 10 acres by late afternoon, with group trees on fire. Air resources were directed to the two fires from nearby dispatch centers.
A Level 1 (Be Prepared) Evacuation Advisory has been issued for the Newberry Estates Subdivision due to the Newberry Fire. The Deschutes County Sheriff’s Office has advised residents to be aware of the danger and monitor websites for information.
