the iPhone the design hasn’t changed much over the years, but each time Apple changes the role of each button. For example, by holding down the side button of the iPhone 11 and iPhone 12 does not prompt you to turn off your iPhone. Instead, it triggers Siri, which waits for your question or order a fraction of a second later. I have received countless emails and DMs on Twitter asking for instructions on how to deactivate the latest batch of iPhones.
You need to use a combination of buttons to turn off your phone now. And if you really can’t remember which buttons to press and when, there’s a software button buried in the settings app that turns your phone off.
Below I will explain the mysterious button combination to turn off your iPhone, another button combination that will restart a problematic iPhone, and finally where you can find the soft button to turn it off.
Turn off your iPhone 11 or iPhone 12
So here is what you need to do for the power menu to appear: On your iPhone 11 or iPhone 12, you will need to press and hold the lower the volume button and the side button at the same time. It won’t take long – just a second or two. You will feel a haptic vibration, then you will see the power slider at the top of your screen, along with a Medical identification and emergency SOS cursor near the bottom.
Slide the power switch from left to right and your phone will turn off. To turn it back on, press and hold the Side button until the Apple logo appears on the screen.
Force a struggling iPhone 11 or iPhone 12 to restart
If your phone is running slowly or freezing and you are unable to display the power menu, you can initiate a restart using a button sequence Apple introduced with the iPhone X.
Start by pressing and releasing the volume up button, then press and release the volume down button. Finally, press and hold the side button. A new power menu will appear, waiving all medical and emergency information. But instead of sliding the switch, press and hold the side button until you see the Apple logo on your phone.
Don’t worry, rebooting your phone abruptly doesn’t erase any data or information. But, more often than not, this fixes the problem you are having.
Turn off your phone using the Settings app
If you can’t memorize the button combination, it might be easier. Open the Settings application and go to General and scroll to the bottom of the screen. There you will find a button titled To close. Press it and slide the power off button to turn off your phone.
It wasn’t too bad, was it? To be honest, I rarely turn off my phone. Instead, I mainly use a hard restart to turn my phone off and on again automatically. Since this is my primary method of troubleshooting and no data is lost, it can’t hurt.
