Some people will love his looks, others will think he has spent time in the accessory aisle of the auto parts store before.

BMW’s current generation X5 SUV is a reasonably good looking automobile. It removes the large grids that were previously considered; it has a beautiful chiseled shape and a well-appointed (albeit a bit staid) interior. Sadly, BMW isn’t just letting this be good enough as it announced the 2022 X5 Black Vermillion edition on Sunday.

Black vermilion? Isn’t that some sort of fourth-level Marvel character? No – well, maybe so? Regardless – it’s also a special edition X5 with frozen black paint, highly questionable red grille slats and less questionable red brake calipers. No, really, that’s the main thing: black car, red accents.

The X5 Black Vermillion is available exclusively with the 335 horsepower six-cylinder xDrive40i transmission (sorry, V8 fans) and only 350 units will be shipped to the United States, each starting at $ 83,295, including the destination fee of $ 995 from BMW. For context, the base X5 xDrive40i starts at $ 62,695 while the much more powerful xDrive50i starts at $ 83,795.

So what else do you get for this price difference? Well, for starters you get the M Shadowline Adaptive LED Laser Headlights, which is not otherwise available on the xDrive40i. You also get 22-inch gray orbit wheels and an M Sport exhaust system. Inside there is a merino leather interior with red piping on the seats, glass controls for the shift lever and iDrive as well as carbon trim. Beyond all that, this is just a highly optional six-cylinder X5.

If you want to get your hands on one of these Black Vermillions, start bugging your dealer soon. American production is expected to start between September and December 2021.
