LOS ANGELES – Manny Pacquiao and Errol Spence Jr. officially announced on Sunday that they will fight on August 21 in a bout between an eight-division world champion and one of the sport’s most dominant current champions.
Pacquiao (62-7-2, 39 KOs) and Spence (27-0, 21 KOs) will battle for the WBC and IBF welterweight titles from Spence when they meet at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas.
Pacquiao, 42, is a senator in his native Philippines. He hasn’t fought since July 2019, when he defeated Keith Thurman by split decision for his third straight victory.
At a press conference, Pacquiao admitted he was taking a significant risk by coming back against one of boxing’s best active fighters. Pacquiao said he could have chosen “a much easier fight compared to Errol Spence” for his comeback fight, but chose to face the undefeated 147-pound champion “because I want to give the fans a good fight. . I want a real fight. “
Spence, 31, will only be in the ring for the second time since October 2019, when he survived a one-time car crash in which he was thrown from his Ferrari 488 Spider. Spence was convicted of impaired driving, but received no jail time.
He returned to his hometown of Dallas in December with a unanimous decision over Danny Garcia.
Pacquiao has only been stopped once since 1999, but Spence has said he won’t enter the ring looking for a knockout. Spence is 3½ inches taller than Pacquiao and his body was noticeably taller during their ceremonial throw-in.
“I definitely have the ability to finish it,” Spence said. “But for me, it’s about winning the fight.”
