President Biden on Monday praised Cuban protesters for making a “call for freedom and help” during Sunday’s historic protests, calling on the Cuban government to allow peaceful protests.
Biden’s statement follows Cuban President Miguel Díaz-Canel’s claims that the United States is funding the protesters.
“We stand by the Cuban people and their clear call for freedom and relief from the tragic grip of the pandemic and the decades of repression and economic suffering to which it has been subjected by the authoritarian regime in Cuba,” he said. Biden said.

Protesters have demanded freedom and are calling for the dissolution of the country’s communist dictatorship as the country goes through its worst economic crisis in decades, as well as a resurgence of coronavirus cases.
Jake Sullivan, the White House National Security Advisor, said on Twitter that “the United States supports freedom of speech and assembly in Cuba and would strongly condemn any violence or targeting of peaceful protesters exercising their universal rights “.

But Díaz-Canel blamed the United States for the protests, saying the US government not only restricted Cuba’s access to goods, but also paid people to protest.
Diaz-Canal said the protesters are a “counterrevolutionary and mercenary” group paid by the US government to “organize these kinds of protests.”
“The moment we need to focus on is how to deal with what’s problematic, how to achieve financial capability,” Diaz-Canal said. in a video clip posted on Twitter.
“We call on all revolutionaries in the country, all communists, to take to the streets wherever there is an effort to produce these provocations,” Diaz-Canel said Sunday, according to Reuters.
