Elon Musk says he turned down Wall Street jobs to focus on tech

(Bloomberg) – Elon Musk said he turned down jobs on Wall Street to focus on tech.

“I have been offered several well-paying jobs on Wall Street. I refused, ”the CEO of Tesla Inc. told his lawyer during questioning during a trial in Wilmington, Delaware, about the company’s acquisition of SolarCity in 2016.

Musk attended the University of Pennsylvania and moved to Silicon Valley during the dot-com boom. He founded a company that eventually became PayPal Holdings Inc. and made its first million when PayPal was sold to eBay Inc.

Back when Musk was starting his career, Wall Street was a gateway to wealth and power for ambitious young graduates. Since then, however, its luster has faded with the rapid rise of the tech industry over the past two decades.

The industry has struck dozens of billionaires overnight and now offers compelling and lucrative career prospects. It is also seen as more conducive to flexible work options, particularly in the wake of the Covid-19 pandemic. Many Wall Street companies, by contrast, are pushing for employees to return to the office full-time.

At the booth Monday, Musk said he had been offered jobs on Wall Street, without specifying which companies or where.
