Something is happening on Relic Entertainment’s Twitch channel. The developer appears to be broadcasting a map of the Mediterranean Sea from above, and it’s styled in a way that gives off early 20th-century vibes. There is one franchise in the history of the studio that aligns most closely with this, but just for the sake of completeness, let’s explore all the possibilities.
We are going to eliminate the stupid ones first. I’m ready to shoot in the dark and say it probably has nothing to do with Homeworld or Dawn of War. While Earth technically exists in these two sci-fi universes, it is a distant memory in Homeworld and the center of a dystopian empire ruled by an immortal emperor-god in the other. So I think we can safely rule them out.
Earlier this year, we got a lot of new information about the upcoming Age of Empires 4. It’s based on history, so there is some potential. But why focus specifically on the Mediterranean? Of the playable AoE 4 factions at launch, only two (the Abbasid Empire and France) actually held territory in the area the stream appears to be obsessed with. And their main power bases were hundreds of kilometers away in Baghdad and Paris, respectively. So unless they are announcing a campaign on the Muslim conquest of North Africa, that seems like an odd choice.
This leaves a prime candidate. I think it’s pretty clear that we’re finally getting a sequel to 2003’s Impossible Creatures.
No, it’s probably related to Company of Heroes. It’s been eight years since Company of Heroes 2, and four years since the release of the last DLC. That means we’re good enough for a sequel. But it’s also possible that this is an Italian DLC for Company of Heroes 2. It would be weird to release new content for such an old game after so long, but stranger things have definitely happened.
The Italian theater of WWII has yet to be explored in the series and tends to be overlooked by strategy games in general. From 1943 to 1945, a huge allied multinational force landed opposite the continent from the legendary beaches of Normandy and had very harsh words for a certain Benito Moussolini. Rolling an armored column through villas and vineyards would certainly be a nice change of pace from the grim, wintry hellish landscape that dominated Company of Heroes 2’s main campaign and its excellent Ardennes Assault expansion.
