Children as young as 5 among the latest victims of Florida condo collapse

Three children aged 5 to 9 were among the latest victims to be found in the rubble of a tragic Florida condominium collapse last month, which has so far left 94 confirmed deaths.

Two of the three young people identified on Sunday are the nieces of Paraguayan first lady Silvana Lopez Moreira: Alexia Maria Pettengill Lopez Moreira, 9, and her 6-year-old sister, Anna Sophia Pettengill Lopez Moreira, police said on Facebook.

Lorenzo De Oliveira Leone, 5, was also among the 10 new victims identified on Sunday.

The sister of the Paraguayan first lady, Sophia Lopez Moreira, and her brother-in-law, Luis Pettengill, were found earlier in the ruins, along with their youngest son, Luis Lopez Moreira, 3.

The sad news is the final blow to grieving relatives who are staying at a nearby hotel while waiting for the victims to be picked up and identified.

“We know they are going to continue to need our support in the weeks and months to come and we are here for them,” said Miami-Dade Mayor Daniella Levine Cava.

The 12-story oceanfront building collapsed shortly before 1:30 a.m. on June 24.

Officials said in a briefing Monday that 22 people were still missing in the rubble.

Several other children have been found in the ruins of the South Champlain Towers since first responders began searching for survivors after the collapse.

Among them was 7-year-old Stella Cattarossi, whose father was among the first responders working on the job when her body was found.

No survivors have been found since the day of the collapse.

The effort was reclassified as a salvage operation as hopes of finding survivors waned after more than two weeks.
