The draft continues to roll and the Yankees continue their run on college pitching. They took out right-hander Will Warren 243rd overall, their third straight pick used on a collegiate pitcher. Warren toured in four years with the University of Southeast Louisiana and is 6ft 2in and 175lb.
MLB Pipeline didn’t rank Warren among its top 250 prospects, although Baseball America ranked him 160th overall, hinting at a possible value pick at the end of the draft. Warren fluctuated between roles during his early years in college before settling as a full-time starting pitcher in 2021. He made 14 starts with a 2.57 ERA, striking out 95 batters on strikes against. 25 walks in 91 innings.
Warren is said to have added velocity to his senior year, as Baseball America writes: “His average fastball went from 90-91 and 95 to 95 to 91-93 mph and 95-97. His ability to carry that speed deeper into games has also improved.
That would seem to put Warren on a nice positive trajectory as he hits the pros. He also sports a pair of Breaking Bullets, with his upper 70s curve bullet apparently having a very high spin rate.
The right-hander seems to be an interesting talent for finding eight laps deep. Either way, with the Yankees’ apparent focus midway through seasoned pitchers, the organization’s pitching depth at lower levels is expected to strengthen.
