The higher ground of the Obamas and Paternity Temple Hill producers are teaming up for a new project at Netflix.
Businesses grow Blackout, a film and television “event” adapted from six different love stories, each written by a different writer. The project, Netflix notes, is being developed simultaneously as a television series and a film adaptation. This means that some of the six stories could end up in the film, while others are in the TV show. Sources warn that while this appears to be a franchise in the making, it isn’t a “multiverse” that will consist of multiple movies and TV shows – at least not for the time being.
Blackout takes place in New York City during a power outage on a hot summer night. It is told from the point of view of 12 teenagers with six love shots. The six writers attached to the pen stories for the film and television project are Dhonielle Clayton (Little pretty things), Tiffany D. Jackson (Allegedly), Pierre Nic (Dear Martin), Angie Thomas (The hate you give), Ashley Woodfolk (The beauty that remains) and Nicola Yoon (Absolutely everything).
Temple Hill will produce the project, which will mark a reunion with Netflix and Higher Ground after Kevin Hart’s feature film Paternity. Higher Ground, which has a global deal with Netflix, has teamed up with the streamer to release the Sony Pictures movie this year after the pandemic blocked its theatrical release. Temple Hill, founded by Wyck Godfrey and Marty Bowen, has features Twilight, Maze Runner, Our Stars’ Fault, Happiest Season, First Man and televisions The stranger, Dave and Love, Victor among his credits.
Blackout becomes Obamas’ latest project for Netflix, joining features American Factory, Becoming, Crip Camp, child-oriented entrance There is a twist and We the people, with several others at various stages of development. The Obamas signed a production deal with Netflix in May 2018. The former first couple made a massive first list of film and TV projects in April 2019.
This is how Netflix describes Blackout: “Six prolific authors have written six dark love stories that all take place during a power outage on a sweltering summer night. From the perspective of 12 teens with six love shots, Blackout unfolds as a heat wave blankets New York City in darkness and causes electrical mayhem. When the lights go out and people reveal hidden truths, love blossoms, friendships transform, and all possibilities take flight. An ex-couple must bury their rivalry and roam Manhattan to return to Brooklyn in time to throw a block party. Two girls search for a lost photo and find something more. Two boys trapped in the subway come face to face with their feelings. A pair of best friends stuck in the NYPL and surrounded by love stories find out if there is one in their future. A trio of traveling senior children take control of a double-decker sightseeing bus as they try to have a little fun… and work on their messy love triangle. Two strangers debate the philosophical nature of identity and wonder if they can find something else between them.
