Samsung’s free TV service is now available on the web

You no longer need to purchase a Samsung phone or TV to try out the company’s Plus service. Both Protocol and Android Central Note that Samsung has made its free TV offering available on the web, allowing you to stream to virtually any device with a browser. The mobile app also supports Chromecast streaming.

A Samsung spokesperson revealed that the tech giant quietly launched its free web TV in the second quarter of the year – it just didn’t advertise the expanded platform. It’s unclear why Samsung was silent, but smooth launches like this give businesses a chance to refine service without the usual pressure.

The current incarnation of TV Plus offers free access to approximately 140 streaming channels, including ABC News Live, PBS Kids, and a host of specialty channels. You will need to sign in to a Samsung account to watch some channels, but others have no requirements. As long as you are comfortable with the ads, there are no other conditions.

The move puts Samsung TV Plus in competition with other free services, including Pluto TV and Fox’s Tubi. It could also give you a reason to steer away from hardware-related competitors like The Roku Channel. It is not a surprising decision in this regard. Streaming services often need large audiences to thrive, and the web version could help TV Plus grow. It’s also a recognition that the services help sell hardware – TV Plus may not make a lot of money on its own, but it could be a factor the next time you buy a gadget.
