A year ago, in the 2020 abbreviated draft, the Detroit Tigers selected three varsity fielders, a university receiver, a university outfielder and a multi-position preparation ball player.
Six players, zero throwers.
Of course, the Tigers signed their share of pitchers in the post-draft free agency period. They did not intend to select only positional players in the draft. It just happened like that.
In 2020, five of the Tigers’ top six picks were pitchers. Again, said Scott Pleis, director of amateur scouting for the Tigers, it wasn’t necessarily planned that way.
“The approach is always to try to get the best guy,” Pleis said. “In the past we’ve had pitching-dominated top 10 rounds, but it wasn’t a philosophy to do that. We wanted to get some guns, but it sort of went like that this year. “
After drafting Oklahoma prep pitcher Jackson Jobe and University of Texas pitcher Ty Madden on day one, the Tigers started Monday by selecting infielder Izaac Pacheco with the 39th pick overall. Then it was a series of pitchers, including University of Alabama right-hander Dylan Smith.
