Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, DN.Y., broke her silence Thursday on the anti-communist and pro-freedom protests that erupted in Cuba by attributing in part the suffering of “everyday people” to the historical legacy of the United States. -a year-old embargo.
“We are seeing Cubans rising up and protesting for their rights like never before. We stand in solidarity with them and condemn the anti-democratic actions carried out by President Díaz-Canel,” the self-proclaimed democratic socialist said in a statement.
She called the Communist government’s suppression of media, speeches and demonstrations “gross violations of civil rights.”
But she then referred to the United States’ “contribution” to what is turning out to be the worst crisis Cuba has known in decades.
“We must also name the American contribution to Cuban suffering: our sixty-year-old embargo,” she said.

His comments came after Black Lives Matter issued a statement also blaming the US embargo for the country’s instability and credited the Cuban government with historically granting asylum to “black revolutionaries.”

The United States imposed the embargo after Fidel Castro overthrew the United States-backed Batista regime in 1959. Since then, the presidential administrations have renewed the embargo, which aims to isolate Cuba economically and diplomatically.

Former President Barack Obama tried to normalize relations with Cuba during his second term. These policies were reversed under President Donald Trump, who imposed new sanctions.
Last month, the United States voted against a UN resolution that overwhelmingly condemned the US economic embargo on Cuba for the 29th year.
Ocasio-Cortez called the embargo “cruel absurdity”, adding that “like too many other US policies targeting Latin Americans, cruelty is the main thing.”

“I categorically reject the Biden administration’s defense of the embargo. It is never acceptable that we use cruelty as leverage against everyday people,” she wrote.
