Melanie Newman, who has been the Orioles’ radio announcer since last year, will make the call for the game, while baseball analyst and MLB.com editor Sarah Langs will be the analyst in the booth. . They will join Alanna Rizzo, who will report on the field, and Heidi Watney and Lauren Gardner, who will host the pre-game and post-game shows.
Gardner, who is a reporter for both the MLB Network and the National Hockey League Network, called the new landmark moment a “pinch me,” adding that she and the other women who join her have “all worked so hard for so many years. to get to this point. “
The news follows the hiring of Kim Ng as the first female MLB general manager by the Miami Marlins and follows the lead of several other professional sports organizations that have already hosted all-female games.
In March, the NBA made history when a five-woman team managed a game between the Toronto Raptors and the Denver Nuggets. Newman, who called minor league baseball games over the radio for six years, was part of the first all-female broadcast of a minor league game in 2019 alongside Suzie Cool. The following year, in 2020, she became the voice of the Orioles radio show.
Although she has made history as a “first” several times during her career, she says her goal is to make sure there is a path behind her for other women.
“It’s something that I recognize as very important,” she says of her accomplishments as “firsts”. “But we also want to make sure that while we get all of these firsts, we aren’t the last either.”
