The parent company of WordPress.com and Tumblr will acquire the Pocket Casts podcast player from a public media consortium that included NPR among other organizations.

Automattic announced that it was eager to build integrations with its WordPress.com product – it only promoted a new CMS plugin from Spotify-owned podcasting company Anchor in February – and that co – App founders, Russell Ivanovic and Philip Simpson, will also be joining the company.

Podcast Media LLC, owner of Pocket Cast since 2018, and its member shareholders have not yet made a statement about this agreement at the time of publication.

NPR noted in its last financial report in December that the group’s board of directors was seeking a buyer for the app with the goal of selling it by October. The group, which currently includes New York Public Radio, Chicago Public Media and the BBC, struggled to monetize the app with the introduction of paid features and lost a significant chunk of its investment.

Pocket Casts is the second pickup Automattic has done in as many months – it bought the Day One logging app in June.
