COLUMBUS, Ohio – Former Ohio State football player Ted Ginn Jr. announced his retirement on Friday afternoon after a 14-year NFL career.
“I have devoted my whole life to football so far,” Ginn said at his press conference. “I’m going out in peace. … On my own terms, not forced.
He announced his decision to retire at a press conference held at Glenville High School. He has spent time with six professional teams during his career, capturing 412 passes for 5,742 yards and 33 touchdowns. While with the Carolina Panthers, he played in Super Bowl 50, a loss to the Denver Broncos.
He ended his career spending a season with the Chicago Bears, recording three catches for 40 yards.
Ginn is best known for his stint as the Buckeye from 2004 to 2006. He had 4,106 all-purpose yards and 26 touchdowns as a wide receiver and returns specialist. In 2004, he signed with OSU as the nation’s No.2 player.
The Cleveland native was among the first Glenville High School players – coached by his father, Ted Sr. – to play for the Buckeyes during the Jim Tressel era.
“It’s one of the most important things that I will love and always cherish,” Ginn said of being coached by his father. “It wasn’t easy, but it was what I wanted. This is what we wanted. We were able to have dreams, change lives, set examples, be examples. Be black men, be a little boy, be a father. To be able to hang out with him right now and see him see me being who I am.
“Just change the culture. Change the culture of the black man. The two of us under the same roof, it was special.
