Things are getting worse for Tracy Stone-Manning, President Biden’s candidate for the Bureau of Land Management.
If confirmed, Stone-Manning would head an agency responsible for managing 245 million acres of public land and 700 million acres of underground mining estate, according to the BLM.
But his ties to a tree-planting plot in 1989 led to intense Republican opposition.
She testified, in exchange for immunity, that she patched up and sent an anonymous letter to the US Forest Service on behalf of John P. Blount, her former roommate and friend. The letter told the Forest Service that 500 pounds of “spikes measuring 8 to 10 inches in length” had been stuck in trees in an Idaho forest.
Republican Senate Leader Mitch McConnell and all Republicans on the Senate Energy and Natural Resources Committee have urged Biden to withdraw his appointment.
The candidate’s written responses to senators raised questions about her veracity.

In her first set of written responses, she denied ever being the target of a criminal investigation – but her own past statements, as well as the lead investigator into the case, directly contradict that claim.
“She told the committee that she had never been investigated and yet complained that she was investigated in the press,” previously told Fox News on Wyoming Senator John Barrasso, the committee’s top Republican.
In her written responses to follow-up questions from Senators, which Fox News reviewed, Stone-Manning said she had no “personal knowledge” of a tree-planted plot in her lifetime.
But two of the men convicted in the 1989 tree-planting plot told E&E News that Stone-Manning actually had prior knowledge of the plot. Two other co-conspirators of the plot, however, said she was unaware of the plot in advance.
In 1989, a few months before the trees were headed, Stone-Manning hosted an environmental festival that included a “tree hair removal competition,” according to Montana Kaiman records reviewed by Fox News. This revelation has not been reported before.

So far, the White House has backed its beleaguered candidate.
