War Thunder players take their tanks seriously. But a player may have gone a little too far.

The player in question, known as Pyrophoric, took to the War Thunder forum on Wednesday evening to post an image of a Challenger 2 Army Equipment Support Publication (AESP) battle tank – as an operating manual. – to try to convince the developer Gaijin Entertainment -The game version is not authentic compared to the real version.

According to an article in the UK Defense Journal, the image had its label “UK Restricted” crossed out, with an “UNCLASSIFIED” stamp added. Various parts would have been completely blackened.

Here’s what the player posted alongside the document and two screenshots of the tank in War Thunder:

“Link these screenshots with the following modified image from the AESP which is supposed to show the relationship between the different components. The image is not exactly to scale as it is only intended to show the position. components relative to each other, but it works for the point I’m trying to make here. The journals are located in the center of the rotor. The journals support the rotor in the turret structure and the GCE subcomponents, as previously stated, are all mounted on the rotor. “

It appears that the user who posted the classified image is from the British military – as the UK Defense Journal points out, Pyrophoric lists their location as Tidworth, a garrison town in south-eastern Wiltshire, England. Also in Tidworth? The Royal Tank Regiment which operates the Challenger 2 tanks.

The footage was removed and a mod for War Thunder called Templar_ stepped in to explain the remarkable situation – that the developer received confirmation from the Department of Defense itself that the published documents were classified.

“We have written confirmation from the MoD that this document remains classified,” reads the mod’s post.

“By continuing to broadcast it, you are breaking the Official Secrets Act as stated in the disclaimer on the cover of the document, an offense of up to 14 years in prison if prosecuted. You are already aware of it, as a service person, you signed a statement stating that you understand the act and the actions it requires you to take. Whenever you post this, you place us (international representatives of Gaijin), especially all British citizens, in hot water as such a useful warning declares that unauthorized retention of a protected document is an offense.

Pyrophoric posted this screenshot in their article, highlighting inaccuracies in War Thunder’s tank model.

The argument over the War Thunder Challenger 2 has been brewing for more than two years, since the tank was added to the game in March 2019. The thread that now has the internet’s astonished gaze turned squarely on it began life in February. 2019. Since then he has amassed nearly 8,000 responses spread over 319 pages.

Pyrophoric had been active in the thread – hours before the post which included the image of the classified document, they posted to explain:

“As I’ve said a few times now, the complexity of the build is sometimes hard to see / show with pictures … It’s so complex in the case of CR2 that I don’t completely blame Gaijin for being wrong. All I try to do is point out the areas where they are incorrect. “

A player in the thread, which is now closed to new comments, asked if the suggested modifications to the tank could be made despite the fact that secret documents were used to suggest them.

The Smin1080p community manager ended this discussion fairly quickly, stating, “There is no valid source that can be used. Therefore, no changes will take place.

“We made it clear our position on the source material.”

Remarkably, this doesn’t seem like the first time this has happened. Before the documents were deleted, Smin1080p posted to say that “the last time such a document was shared which was claimed to be” unrated “it was in fact still classified and it has been confirmed that it was not ‘should never have been shared’.

“We make it very clear that we will not process any source material unless it is publicly available and fully declassified with the rights to prove it.”

I imagine Pyrophoric is currently in hot water with his superior.
