SANDWICH, England – After an almost perfect opening of nine on Saturday at the Open, Rory McIlroy blocked his moving day move with bogeys at numbers 11 and 13.
The 14the hole, after missing the fairway with his tee shot, he had had enough.
As McIlroy’s tee shot headed for the rough, McIlroy cocked his iron over his shoulder and threw the club into the air, butt, like a tomahawk. When McIlroy was asked about the moment after his tour, it became a matter of semantics.
“It really wasn’t a club throw,” he shrugged, “it was just a little throw.”
When asked if he was “pissed off,” McIlroy continued to play on defense: “I wasn’t as pissed off as Tyrrell Hatton was yesterday,” smiled McIlroy.
Hatton, who is used to running the course, was spotted on Friday’s TV show knocking down a fan at No.11 and breaking his gap into two three holes later.
By comparison, McIlroy’s moment of frustration in the third round could, in fact, be easily referred to as a “little throw.”
