Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis and Texas Gov. Greg Abbott visited the southern border on Saturday and warned that rising numbers of migrants and deadly drugs like fentanyl have or will have a ripple effect in other states.
“Just the magnitude of this in terms of the stress on public resources, school, medicine, stuff, it’s going to have a huge impact on communities in Florida and I think across the country,” he said. DeSantis said at a press conference.

“This is a situation in which all states must participate in the escalation process,” Abbott said.
The pair spoke in the Del Rio sector as the Florida governor visited Lone Star State to see the border crisis in person. He met with Abbott and was briefed by law enforcement officials about the crisis, and also made visits to the border wall and areas affected by the crisis.
There were over 188,000 migrant encounters in June alone, bringing the total number of migrant encounters in FY2021 to over one million. Additionally, drugs like fentanyl were seized in greater quantities, with a 12% increase in June and 78% more seizures in fiscal 2021 compared to all of fiscal 2020.
DeSantis noted his condition had a problem with methamphetamine and said 95% of it came from the border.

“What’s happening at the border is happening here today, but it’s going to happen in these other states tomorrow or next week or next month,” Abbott said.
DeSantis said he was shocked to hear from officials in Del Rio that the majority of migrants being processed in the United States had Florida as their final destination.
“70% of the people they banned said their ultimate destination was the state of Florida, so that’s something, every time there’s a wave across the border I’m not saying that ‘is 70% in each part of the border but here a majority, “he said.

Abbott and Arizona Gov. Doug Ducey had both appealed for help from other states, asking them to send in labor and law enforcement to help at the border. Florida was one of those states that responded, along with states like South Dakota and Iowa.
Texas has launched a number of efforts to stem the crisis, including making a down payment of $ 250 million on a new wall-building project after the Biden administration abruptly ended the project in January.

DeSantis said Florida staff have helped apprehend more than 2,800 illegal immigrants, with 100 arrests for crimes including human trafficking, drug trafficking and vehicle theft.

The two governors, both Republican, blame the Biden administration for the crisis – pointing to the rollback of Trump-era policies like the border wall and Migrant Protection Protocols (MPP), arguing that if those policies are restored, the crisis would be over.
“Thank you for stepping in where the federal government won’t,” DeSantis told his Texas counterpart. “We understand how important this is not only to Texas but to other states and we are absolutely going to see impacts in Florida and other states if we don’t turn the tide.”
