Life in San Diego County is somewhat back to normal. But even outside on Friday, several people were still wearing their masks. Most of the people NBC 7 spoke to said they were vaccinated and chose to wear a mask because of concerns about the dominant delta variant of COVID-19.
Restoring masks indoors – whether or not you are vaccinated is a step that could decrease the spread of the virus, health officials have said.
Kelvin Henry of NBC 7 has spoken to an epidemiology expert about what is behind the spate of COVID-19 cases in San Diego County.
Los Angeles County – where Krystal Emory works – announced on Wednesday that it would reinstate the wearing of the mask.
“It was liberating not to have to wear a mask, but now we’re coming back to it,” Emory said. “I’m a little frustrated, but I totally understand. “
Daily cases of COVID-19 in San Diego have increased.
NBC 7’s Melissa Adan examines recent data on COVID cases, which shows cases are on the rise and most of them involve younger people.
The county reported 272 new cases on Tuesday. As of Wednesday, that number had risen to 428. But health officials say the rate of increase does not compare to that in LA County, which reports its highest COVID numbers since March.
“I have no problem with that,” said Lori Odorico, resident of Santee. “I had coronavirus around Thanksgiving time. I had to stay at home for two weeks. I was going crazy.
Part of the reason San Diego isn’t following LA’s lead in requiring masks so far is the vaccination rate.
Eighty percent of the eligible population in San Diego is at least partially vaccinated, compared to 70% for LA County. San Diego County is home to approximately 3.3 million people while more than 10 million live in Los Angeles.
“It’s nice not having to wear a mask,” said Santee resident Bree Rohner. “If that’s what they want to do, I’m not going to fight or anything.”
“I wouldn’t be in favor of that. I mean, if that happens, I’ll wear the mask. I’m not going to make a poor store worker force me to wear the mask, ”said John Ashton, a resident of El Cajon.
Some residents, especially those who have been vaccinated, do not want to cancel mandates related to the pandemic.
“I was vaccinated, almost three months,” Dru Warfield said. “If you want to be that person who says to yourself, ‘Well, I’m not going to wear a mask,’ then you’ll be the same reason we have to do it over and over again. So, it’s a little ironic if you really think about it. The same people who don’t want to wear their masks keep the masks coming back. “
So far, San Diego County has seen 108 cases of delta variants and not everyone has been vaccinated. The California Department of Public Health urges everyone to get vaccinated.
