Silverstone fans didn’t have to wait long for the British Grand Prix drama on Sunday, as title rivals Max Verstappen and Lewis Hamilton tangled in the first round while arguing for the lead, sending Verstappen in barriers at 180 mph.
As the Dutchman exited his car, the race was marked by a red flag with Hamilton in second place, behind Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc who took the lead amid the drama.
The incident took place in the dreaded Copse Corner – turn 9 – after poleman Verstappen beat Hamilton off the line and repelled several attacks. But approaching the right-hander all the way, Hamilton moved closer to Verstappen and as they turned the corner, the Mercedes – inside – marked the rear of the Red Bull, sending it through the gravel on a collision course with the tire barriers.
The incident was quickly referred to the stewards for investigation, with Red Bull and Mercedes understandably at odds over whether Hamilton should be penalized. Red Bull team principal Christian Horner was quick to press FIA race director Michael Masi to say “full responsibility lies with Hamilton”, while Mercedes boss , Toto Wolff, rushed over to speak to the commissioners in person.
With Verstappen leading Hamilton by 33 points before the race, but now set to score none, the outcome of the stewards’ investigation will be very important.
