The New York Mets placed ace Jacob deGrom on the injured list retroactively to July 15 with a twitch in his right forearm.
DeGrom felt uncomfortable during a bullpen session in Pittsburgh on Friday, manager Luis Rojas said on Saturday. An MRI a few hours later showed there was a contraction of the forearm but no structural damage.
Rojas said on Sunday that deGrom would no longer throw until the discomfort subsides.
“I am frustrated,” deGrom said on Sunday. “I don’t know what else to say.”
DeGrom is 7-2 with a 1.08 ERA leading the major leagues in 15 starts this season, despite several health issues. He last pitched on July 7 against Milwaukee.
Rojas added that deGrom said on Saturday that he also felt similar tightness in his forearm during a paddock session just before the all-star break. DeGrom did not attend Tuesday night’s All-Star game at Coors Field in Denver, choosing instead to spend time with his family and rest for the second half.
The two-time National League award winner Cy Young skipped an outing between April 28 and May 9 due to discomfort in his right lat muscle, then didn’t throw again until May 25 while passing. time on the injured list with what the Mets said was strain on his right side. DeGrom left his June 11 game against San Diego after six innings with flexor tendonitis in his right arm.
Rojas said on Saturday that these ailments, including the oppression of the right forearm, were unrelated. DeGrom said on Sunday that all of his previous ailments this season were due to his rocking, while the new forearm tightness was not. DeGrom is hitting .364 in 33 batting appearances this season.
