Fans have long debated one word in Bruce Springsteen’s lyrics Born to run opener “Thunder Road”: Some think the words are “Mary’s dress is swinging” and others have been certain that it is “Mary’s dress is waving”. Springsteen’s official material actually printed it both ways, expanding the debate into memes territory.

Finally, the debate is closed, because The New Yorker‘s David Remnick got Springsteen director Jon Landau on the record: “The word is’ balance’,” Landau said. “That’s how he wrote it in his original notebooks, that’s how he sang it on Born to run in 1975, that’s how he always sang it in thousands of shows, and that’s how he sings it on Broadway right now.
