Hamilton and Verstappen fought hard for the lead in the opening stages of the race from Silverstone, after going wheel to wheel for the first half of the lap.
In the explosion towards Copse, Hamilton had managed to grab hold of rival Red Bull and, after briefly turning to the left, he went inside as he got closer to the Dutchman.
But Verstappen held on and, as he turned into the right turn, he was hit by Hamilton’s left front wheel.
This put Verstappen in a spin and he broke the barriers outside the turn at high speed. He has since been taken to hospital for precautionary checks.
The incident was investigated by the FIA and they ruled Hamilton to be to blame, issuing him a 10-second penalty.
In a document explaining the reasons for the penalty, the stewards explained that Hamilton could have done more to avoid the incident as he had room inside Copse to avoid a collision.
“The commissioners reviewed the video and telemetry evidence,” the commissioners said. “Cars 33 [Verstappen] and 44 [Hamilton] entered turn 9 with car 33 in the lead and car 44 slightly behind and inside.
“Car 44 was on a line that did not reach the top of the corner, with room available inside.
“When car 33 turned into the turn, car 44 did not avoid contact and the left front of car 44 touched the right rear of car 33. Car 44 is found to be primarily at fault.”
Hamilton reversed the 10-second penalty to win the British Grand Prix, which allowed him to return firmly to the championship battle.
Speaking after the race, Hamilton had made it clear that he felt Verstappen had not given him enough room in the incident.
“Of course, I always try to be measured in the way I approach things, especially when fighting with Max,” he said. “You know he’s very aggressive.
“And then today, I mean I was fully by his side, and he didn’t give me any space.”
