The mayor of Springfield, Missouri said on Sunday that the solution to the recent surge in COVID-19 cases was for people to get vaccinated.
“We know what the solution is. It’s vaccination. People need to get it. It’s readily available, ”Ken McClure (I) told host John Dickerson on CBS’s“ Face The Nation ”.
“We have so many sites that can still provide this service. The age groups now all extend up to 12 years. It is therefore up to community leaders, to community institutions that people trust, to say that they need to be vaccinated. That’s the only way we’re going to get out of this, ”he added.
McClure also noted that community collaboration is important in successfully fighting the wave.

The mayor’s remarks come as the country experiences an increase in COVID-19 cases driven by the more contiguous delta variant.
Missouri reported more than 1,000 new cases of COVID-19 on Sunday for the sixth day in a row, according to KMBC in Kansas City, which added that state officials said on Friday that 45.1% of the population had been vaccinated.
Asked Sunday about school districts making vaccinations mandatory for returning students, McClure said the Springfield School District will ensure its students are safe.
“I know our school district strongly encourages vaccination. They will, I think, as the students come back in the fall and urge their parents to do it, ”McClure told Dickerson.
“But I have always believed that the Springfield Public School District will take the appropriate steps to ensure that students are as safe as possible. I know they want to focus on in-person learning, and I think they’ll be able to do that, ”he added.
