Foldables are set for a big wave over the next few months as several devices are set to hit the market. The most notable of this group is Samsung’s Galaxy Z Fold 3, but as rumors intensify we are also hearing more about the foldable Google Pixel, which allegedly will adopt a 120Hz display.
Starting with the Galaxy Z Fold 3, tipster Ice Universe posted at Twitter this week that Samsung has apparently placed its priority on this device on folding technology over other parts of the device, like the camera. Apparently, the Galaxy Z Fold 3 and Z Flip 3 will have the “most powerful foldable display technology”. It’s unclear, however, whether this refers to the advancement of technology or the durability of the display.
Pushing towards the former, Ice says the improved technology comes from two aspects. First, a selfie camera under the panel, which has been the subject of rumors for some time. In addition, “Ultra-Thin Glass 2.0” is also mentioned. Presumably, this refers to the improvements that Samsung has made to make S Pen compatibility possible.
Another interesting detail in today’s foldable market comes from display analyst Ross Young. On Twitter, he says that Samsung Display will be making foldable panels for six different devices in 2021. This of course includes the Galaxy Z Flip 3 and Fold 3, which measure 6.7 and 7.55 inches, respectively. These figures have already been reported.
What’s notable here is the first mention of a specification for the upcoming Google Pixel foldable display, which is rumored to be a 7.57-inch LPTO panel with a 120Hz refresh rate. For the size to be known based on previous leaks, this is the first time 120Hz has been mentioned, which is remarkable given that Google has yet to release a 120Hz display in its Pixel line. Young’s tweet also mentions that Oppo will use a 7.11in panel of the same refresh rate and technology with Vivo at 8.2in and Xiaomi at 8.1in.
