Insider reveals when Apple will launch big MacBook Pro redesign

Apple releases new Macs every year, with most upgrades delivering the performance improvements you expect with every CPU and GPU refresh. Major overhauls are rare, as they only happen every few years. As it turns out, there are rumors that 2021 will be the year Apple drops the redesigned MacBook Pro and Air models. But insiders familiar with Apple’s plans have come up with all kinds of launch predictions. The most optimistic rumors claimed that Apple wanted to launch the new MacBook Pro at WWDC in June. And Apple leaked the M1 successor name on YouTube, apparently confirming that a MacBook Pro M1X reveal may be in the works.

Now, a new report says we might not see the new MacBook Pro in stores until much later this year. This matches the more pessimistic leaks from earlier that pointed to September as a potential launch window.

Apple changed that last November. It released the first MacBook Pro and Air devices with its own Apple M1 chip inside. All subsequent Macs will run on M1 chips or better, because Apple no longer needs Intel. But the 2020 MacBook Pros and Air featured the same designs as their Intel-based predecessors.

The redesigned MacBook Pro

Apple is planning a major overhaul of both laptop models. We’ve seen purported renders of the MacBook Air before, and the redesigned claims of the MacBook Pro appeared in several rumors earlier this year.

The flat edges of the 2021 MacBook Pro aren’t that exciting. What’s really exciting are the claims that Apple will be bringing back MagSafe charging and several of the ports it removed a few years ago. The listing includes HDMI and an SD card reader.

The redesigned MacBook Pros will also feature mini-LED displays, similar to the 12.9-inch iPad Pro 2021 display.

Finally, Apple plans to launch the new Pro in two sizes. We are looking at 16 and 14 inch display variants. The latter represents a new entry in Apple’s MacBook Pro range.

September announcement at the earliest

Bloomberg Mark Gurman said in his Light up newsletter (via 9to5Mac) that Apple will announce the new MacBook Pro between September and November.

The insider said production will begin in the third quarter. Ming-Chi Kuo has made similar statements recently. “These new MacBooks were supposed to be launched earlier, but complications from the new mini-LED display have delayed production,” Gurman said. Previous reports claimed production yields had an impact on Apple’s launch plans for the iPad Pro and MacBook Pro. The 12.9-inch tablet with the Liquid Retina XDR (mini-LED) display was not available in stores immediately after Apple’s spring event.

Gurman didn’t detail the redesigned MacBook pro in the newsletter, other than mentioning the potential launch window. He said buyers who aren’t sure which MacBook to choose should go with the Air if they need web browsing, emailing, and light photo editing. The MacBook Pro will offer more speed and RAM for resource-intensive applications like Photoshop and video editing software.
