The opening ceremony for the Tokyo 2020 Olympics isn’t until Friday, but the competition televised on NBCUniversal actually kicks off Tuesday night with three softball games, one of which features the much-vaunted Team USA. The U.S. team is the most decorated program in sports history, winning three consecutive Olympic gold medals in 1996, 2000 and 2004 and a silver medal at the Beijing Olympics in 2008.
Softball in the Olympics is not knockout. In the first round, each of the six participating teams play a match against each of the other five in the first round. The teams are then ranked according to the record of wins and losses for the medal round.
