I bet when you watched the first Steam Deck media preview you probably weren’t thinking, “Hmm, yeah. Sounds good, but what storage medium do these games run on? This is the kind of question that comes later. But it’s worth asking, because even the biggest and best of Valve’s new laptops only have 512GB of disk space. I eat this for breakfast. As it turns out, a lot of the games we’ve seen running were stored on a microSD card.
Don’t take my word for it. Valve engineer Lawrence Yang said so on Twitter. Someone called K-Med asked, “Are there any concerns about the read / write speed of the SD card and the slot?” Will the games on the SD card be playable, just taking longer to load than if they were stored internally? “
This replied: “Yes, games will load faster from internal storage, but games still work fine on an SD card. When IGN arrived, all the games they tried (and filmed) were played on a microSD card.
It’s a bold move from Valve. But it’s also a nice little drop of mic to have in your back pocket when asked. ‘Oh, no need to worry. You can already see how well they work.
I picked up the 256GB version when opening pre-orders last Friday (I have a 2TB version of this Samsung drive lying around), but that’s great news that I can just grab more storage if needed . I was worried because I will probably fill the stuff full of mods. While not all SD cards are created equal, we’re probably at a point where a reasonably specified and affordable card could double or triple the capacity of the device without adding the extra load that an external SSD would bring.
