James Wan is all about haunting stuff. He haunts the houses of Conspiracy, the children of Insidious, the ocean in Aquaman, and cars in furious 7. Now the famous horror director is back with a new original horror film, Smart – and it seems like it’s all about haunting dreams.
With a story by Wan, Ingrid Bisu and Akela Cooper and a script by Cooper, the premise of the film seems simple and gruesome: Madison (Annabelle Wallis) continues to have terrible visions that describe murders, which only get worse. when she finds out about the murders she sees what is really going on. However, the twist makes it seem like the murder is committed by Madison’s childhood imaginary friend.
It’s kind of like that original Disney Channel movie Don’t look under the bed, which is also about an imaginary friend of a child who returns in his adult life to horrific results that I am not going to spoil here, because this film is crazy. James Wan would likely make a killer remake. Perhaps this is where the idea of Smart came from.
Smart premieres in theaters and on HBO Max on September 10.
