Forget the moment, Normani is the moment.
And if you needed more proof of that, take a look at the well-deserved online buzz she sparked after the release of her “Wild Side” music video last weekend. From whimsical footwork to Aaliyah’s sweet sample, this song is already taking shape to finally solidify the former Fifth Harmony member as a formidable force in the industry that she is.
But while most internet users loved almost everything about the song and the video, one of Aaliyah’s family felt a little different. According to The Rap-Up, Aaliyah’s uncle and manager Barry Hankerson says the song would have been “more honorable” if Normani had asked for permission to sample Aaliyah’s “One in a Million”, but he gives his blessing anyway.
Through TMZ, Normani’s team denied using a direct sample of the 1996 hit, believing the influence to be clearly apparent. Whether that’s true or not, Hankerson made it clear that he only wishes the “Waves” frontman success, telling TMZ:
“I believe Aaliyah would be very supportive of a young black woman who chose to emulate her music and her style. I will not oppose anything that highlights Aaliyah’s incredible resistance. So with that in mind, I wish Normani the best of luck with the song and the overall career. God protects you. I think Aaliyah would be delighted.
On Tuesday, the video for “Wild Side” has already garnered nearly 13 million views on YouTube. I would dare say that at least 12,998,999 of them were from my account alone because DID YOU SEE THE VIDEO? Just look at the material !!
I agree Hankerson. Aaliyah would most certainly be proud.
