Director James Wan (Conspiracy, Seen, Insidious) returns to his “rougher, harsher thriller roots” for his new horror thriller, Smart. With Annabelle Wallis (Annabelle, Peaky Blinders) as Madison Mitchell, the film follows her character’s struggles with bizarre visions and encounters with her evil and imaginary childhood friend, Gabriel. “It’s horror, but it’s also a traditional thriller,” Wan said in an interview with IGN. “It’s psychological, it’s a serial killer, but it’s also potentially a monster movie.” Since this is “not a scary movie”, Smart is Wan’s return to a more retro approach to thrillers. “I just thought, ‘When will I get the chance to do a movie like this again? “, did he declare. “The time has come for me to use this opportunity to make the kind of films that I don’t really think about doing at this level anymore. And so it really came out of the desire to go back, kind of a throwback movie. And it was just a story that I talked about that really fit that desire. Smart will begin to haunt theaters on September 10.
