One of New Jersey’s largest healthcare systems fired six senior executives who did not comply with the company’s vaccination mandate.
RWJBarnabas Health said in May that employees “at supervisory level and above” should be vaccinated by the end of June.
“Thanks to the incredible commitment of our leaders, the vast majority of our management team have been vaccinated against Covid-19,” the health system said in a statement to NBC News on Wednesday. “As of July 14, 2,979 staff, or 99.7%, who are at supervisor level and above, have been fully immunized or have received medical and religious exemptions or reprieve.”
“Unfortunately, six employees at supervisor level and above did not live up to the mandate and are no longer employees of RWJBH, in accordance with our policy,” the company said.
The company is also demanding that all staff and doctors get vaccinated “in the coming days”, citing an “ethical and professional responsibility to protect our patients and to ensure a safe and Covid-19-free environment,” according to their statement.
New Jersey has recorded more than one million cases of Covid-19 and 26,500 deaths since the start of the pandemic, according to an NBC News tally. With over 55% of the state vaccinated, Governor Phil Murphy urged unvaccinated residents to get vaccinated against Covid-19 on Tuesday.
The termination was announced the same day the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reported that the delta variant now accounts for more than 83% of new cases of Covid-19.
The increase in the delta variant coincides with a sharp increase in Covid-19 cases, hospitalizations and deaths nationwide in the United States, the CDC said last week.
