BOSTON – The Yankees lost wildly on Thursday night, as reliever Brooks Kriske followed Chad Green’s implosion with one of his own.
Kriske threw four wild shots in the 10th inning and Hunter Renfroe’s sacrifice fly scored Xander Bogaerts third place to give the Red Sox a 5-4 victory at Fenway Park.
The understaffed Yankees in the ninth inning were one point away from a fifth straight win, which would have continued an unlikely run with some of their best players sidelined.
Instead, Green’s struggles continued. He gave Kiké Hernandez a brace with two strikeouts and two points and the Red Sox tied the score in the ninth.
The Yankees regained the lead at the top of 10th on a Brett Gardner sacrifice fly that led free runner Tyler Wade, who had reached third on a DJ LeMahieu Grounder.
But Kriske came in late in the 10th and threw a wild pitch that sent Boston free runner Rafael Devers to third place. A wild second pitch scored Devers to tie the game before Kriske steered Bogaerts to bring in JD Martinez.
Bogaerts moved on to second, then third, on Kriske’s third and fourth wild pitches of the round, before Martinez blasted. But Renfroe followed with a ball to the right to win.
With the loss, the Yankees lost eight games to the Red Sox, who won first place, losing a single to Giancarlo Stanton in the eighth and 5 ² / of scoreless innings to Jordan Montgomery.
The Yankees were without relievers Zack Britton and Aroldis Chapman after the two lefties pitched the previous two days.
In the bottom of the ninth, with the Yankees leading 3-1, Green gave the singles one out to Alex Verdugo and Bobby Dalbec before batter Kevin Plawecki flew to the left.
Hernandez then arrived.
After Boston tied 1-1 with an unearned run in the seventh, the Yankees scored twice in the eighth.
LeMahieu started the round with a ball over ex-Yankee Adam Ottavino, then stole second place. Gardner walked and Stanton came up with a left single.
LeMahieu might have scored on the play anyway, but Verdugo dropped him and never made a home pitch, as the Yankees took the lead, 2-1.
Rougned Odor crushed the runners and a long sacrificial volley from Gleyber Torres led Gardner to make it 3-1.
Montgomery made it through the first two innings before loading up the goals with two strikeouts in the third.
Bogaerts followed with a line leading to the shortstop which was caught by Torres to end the threat and keep the game goalless.
The Yankees took the lead in the fourth.
Gardner and Stanton started with walks to open the set against right-hander Tanner Houck.
After Odour’s withdrawal on catches, the two riders advanced on a pass from Christian Vazquez.
Torres followed with a short Grounder who scored Gardner from third place to make it 1-0.
Receiver Rob Brantly flew to the left to complete the set.
After torrential rains fell for much of the start of the fifth, play was finally stopped after a two-out inside hit by Wade.
After a 55-minute delay in the rain, Houck – who had allowed only the unearned run – was replaced by left-hander Josh Taylor to face LeMahieu.
LeMahieu walked to bring Gardner, who failed.
Despite the long delay, the Yankees fired Montgomery, who had pitched 60 pitches, to start at the bottom of the fifth. Montgomery retired the team in order to maintain the one point lead.
Torres scored two strikeouts in the sixth and stole the second before Brantly blasted.
Montgomery retired nine times in a row before Bogaerts’ two-out single in the bottom of the sixth ended his night after 83 shots.
