Umurangi Generation wins grand prize at IGF Awards

Last night was the IGF and the GDC Awards, a double award ceremony that aims to celebrate indies (at the Independent Games Festival Awards) and blockbusters (at the Game Developers’ Choice Awards).

The IGF part was hosted by Victoria Tran, Community Director of Studio Among Us in Innersloth, and the GDCA part was hosted by Sam Maggs, former editor of Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart and co-founder of the new studio. Soft Lock.

In the IGF categories, Umurangi Generation – a photography game in the vein of Pokémon Snap, but about a dystopian police state in Aotearoa and looming disaster – won big, winning both the Excellence in Narrative and the Grand Prix. Seumas McNally.

Genesis Noir also won two awards: Excellence in Visual Art and Excellence in Audio, while the black-and-white puzzle adventure game Arrog took home the Audience Award. All the games mentioned so far are on Switch! Hooray!

As for the non-Switch winners, we have a voxel demolition simulator game. Tear down Excellence in Design winner, fantastic sports game on browser / social networks Blasball winning the Nuovo Prize (which is awarded to games that make judges “think games differently”; it was once called the Innovation Prize) and a spooky space adventure game Ships winner of the best student game.
