Absolute pandemonium.
The Giants entered the ninth lead on Thursday, behind the Dodgers 3-1, Los Angeles closest Kenley Jansen, looking to redeem himself after spitting out a home run in the ninth the night before.
He was not so lucky.
Wilmer Flores, who hit the aforementioned home run against Jansen in the Giants’ win on Wednesday, brought San Francisco to life with a one-out single. Alex Dickerson followed with a strikeout, but Donovan Solano netted a brace with two strikeouts down the middle to tie the points in goal position. Jason Vosler then followed with a pinch walk to charge the bases.
And then everything went crazy.
Jansen caused Thairo Estrada to run short, but a slow throw in the second allowed Vosler to enter safely. He was initially ruled out on the pitch, but that was canceled by the rerun. Flores scored on the play, bringing the equalizer to home plate.
Darin Ruf was sitting in a glorious 2-0 batting count when Jansen threw what quite obviously should have been called the three ball. However, much to Ruf and the Giants’ dismay, home plate umpire Jansen Visconti called it a strike.
It wasn’t the only controversial batting pitch. Not by far.
In a full tally, Jansen managed to get Ruf to check the swing. The Dodgers thought he had a strikeout. The Giants thought Ruf had taken a walk. On appeal to the first baseman, San Francisco rejoiced and Los Angeles became furious.
Dodgers manager Dave Roberts charged out of the dugout and threw his hat in anger yelling at the referee and was ultimately thrown out. He surely didn’t make it into the clubhouse, as LaMonte Wade then came to plate and scored two with a straight single to give the Giants a superb 5-3 lead.

San Francisco took the lead late in the ninth, and Jake McGee allowed just a brace with two outs before completing the save. The Giants came away with a win and a series victory over the Dodgers, and one of the most unforgettable finishes in the history of their rivalry.
