CHICAGO – A day after announcing he was quitting baseball, Yermin Mercedes was back with the Chicago White Sox affiliate Triple-A.

The White Sox confirmed Thursday that the surprising rookie who carried the team with his booming stick at the start of the season and who was sent to the minors following a prolonged slump was in uniform for the Charlotte Knights versus the Durham Bulls.

Mercedes also apologized on Thursday in an Instagram post.

“I will never give up,” he wrote. “I spent 10 years in the minor leagues. … My dream is (to be) an established player in the big leagues. … I apologize. … I like everyone. I returned.”

It was a turnaround from his post deleted since Wednesday night which included an image with the words “it’s over.” He wrote in the caption, “I got away from baseball for a while. God bless you. It’s finish.”

Hall of Fame manager Tony La Russa promised after Wednesday’s loss to Minnesota to contact Mercedes and insisted the player has a “big league future.”

“You’re at Triple-A, you’ve tasted the big leagues, you can get emotional,” La Russa said. “But I don’t know more than that.”

The 28-year-old Mercedes kicked off Chicago’s offense in the early months of the season, batting .415 with five homers and 16 RBIs in 22 games in April. In May, Mercedes angered La Russa with a home run on a 3-0 pitch in the ninth inning of a game led by the White Sox 15-4.

Mercedes eventually cooled off, hitting 0.150 (16 for 107) in their last 31 games with Chicago before being demoted to Charlotte on July 2.
