The Google Doodle for the opening day of the Tokyo 2020 Olympics is practically a full-size video game. Doodle Champion Island Games is a top-down, classic RPG-style sports adventure with seven mini-game events and global leaderboards.
Champion Island Doodle is the work of Tokyo-based Studio 4 ° C, an award-winning animation studio that worked on the 2010s Halo Captions series of films; 2011 Thunder cat TV series and 2015s Batman: Knight of Arkham for Rocksteady Studios. The star of the player-controlled game is Lucky the Ninja Cat, who lands on Champion Island and finds a quadrennial celebration of the athletic competition already underway.
In each mini-game, Lucky faces a different animal inhabiting Champion Island. Table tennis is played against the Tengu bird; The skateboard (which strongly resembles the Atari classic from 1986 720 °) has the Tanuki for opponents; Archery is against Yoichi, a samurai general; Rugby faces sumo Oni, with “Momotaro & friends” assisting on the player’s team.
In Artistic Swimming, players face off against Princess Otohime and her turtle, trying to match a scrolling highway. Climbing’s opponent is an owl-like Fukuro and in the Marathon (truly a long side-scrolling obstacle course) players take on the Kijimuna.
At the beginning of Champion Island Doodle, players can line up with four teams (Blue Ushi; Red Karasu; Yellow Inari and Green Kappa) to register their scores in a world leaderboard. At the time of publication, Team Red was easily the leader, with over 42 million points.
“We’re delighted to have been able to hint at various stories from Hokkaido in the north to Okinawa in the south in the Doodle,” the studio developers wrote in a Q&A with Google. “In addition to drawing inspiration from stories known across Japan, we also hoped to convey the country’s rich and diverse natural beauty, including submarines, tropical sandy beaches, forests and snow-capped mountains.”
