Gabrielle Union showed off her natural curls after her “chunky chop” in stunning photos she posted to Instagram on Friday.
The actor noted that films often show women cutting their hair when they hit a low point in life, but that she was, of course, in a good mood before her big haircut.
“So I did one thing,” she wrote in the caption of the article. “Movies always show women who cut their hair when all is lost, but I wanted to know the feeling of a change when the going gets tough. It hits differently and it’s foreign to me but I [love] this new again.
Union has spoken openly about her journey in natural hair before.
In an interview with People in February, she spoke about how pervasive societal issues and the stigma rooted in dark hair discrimination impacted her as a child.
“When I was younger I hated everything [my hair]. I wanted it to be something other than what it was, ”Union said. She later added: “I was inundated with images and messages saying, ‘You just aren’t as pretty as you are. “”
“The pictures I saw on television, in magazines and in the movies reaffirmed what they were saying,” she continued. “That I wasn’t” and that people who look like me aren’t. You couldn’t have that “factor” and have hair like mine or skin like mine. “
Union explained that as she got older, she realized how beautiful and resilient her natural hair really is, despite anti-black societal messages to the contrary.
“I marvel at the strength of my hair and all the variety of looks and styles I can achieve,” she said. “I can literally turn into anything.”
In February, Union shared a video of her showing off her curls in the wind.
“It’s the skin and the curls for me,” she captioned this post.
