The Boston Bruins made a modest move to improve their lineup Wednesday, but there could still be a blockbuster to follow.
The Bruins acquired Minnesota Wild's Charlie Coyle center in exchange for Ryan Donato and a draft pick, which would likely have earned Boston a nod, as many expect Coyle to assume the role. third-line center for his hometown team.
But if Don Sweeney and Group B's reception really want to make waves before the trading deadline on Monday, they still have the ammo to do something. Elliotte Friedman of Sportsnet said Wednesday night that he expected Boston to continue to be aggressive before the deadline.
"The cost (to get Coyle) was not prohibitive," Friedman said in his "31 Thoughts" podcast with Jeff Marek. "Ryan Donato is lucky to be a good player, but the draft pick is mediocre at least. I think the Bruins could do a lot of other things that would cost them more. Boston is one of the few teams to trade a Ryan Donato and still feels that his pool of prospects has not been devastated.
"They could always make another move. I do not see that as a prohibition of anything else, whether it's (Artemi) Panarin, whether it's (Wayne) Simmonds or whether it's Kevin Hayes. I do not think that changes anything. "
The Bruins, winners of seven consecutive games, certainly look like one of the best hockey teams, and the acquisition of one of the aforementioned players would go a long way in checking the remaining box of the attack among the top six.
Friedman cited Simmonds, Panarin and Hayes as possibilities, and mentioned a rumor that the B's would be interested in Ottawa striker Mark Stone.
"Negotiating with Ryan Donato will not stop them from catching another big fish if they want to," Friedman added.
