The American rider appeared to get tangled up with another competitor as he took a turn at the start of round three of the men’s BMX Racing semi-final at Ariake Urban Sports Park on Thursday.

“Doctors reported Fields had suffered a brain hemorrhage at the site,” USA Cycling said.

Fields receives medical assistance after crashing in the BMX race semifinals.

“After a night in intensive care, doctors are happy to report that there has been no further bleeding and that no new injuries have been found,” the statement said.

“Fields has been removed from the intensive care unit and will remain in the hospital until cleared.”

Fields, 28, who won gold at Rio 2016 and one of the big favorites in Tokyo, required medical attention after the accident before being carried on a stretcher in an ambulance and then transported to St. Luke International Hospital.

Fields’ father told USA Today on Saturday that his son, “cognitively, he’s doing well.”
