“Doctors reported Fields had suffered a brain hemorrhage at the site,” USA Cycling said.
“After a night in intensive care, doctors are happy to report that there has been no further bleeding and that no new injuries have been found,” the statement said.
“Fields has been removed from the intensive care unit and will remain in the hospital until cleared.”
Fields, 28, who won gold at Rio 2016 and one of the big favorites in Tokyo, required medical attention after the accident before being carried on a stretcher in an ambulance and then transported to St. Luke International Hospital.
“There is some fluid in their brain, but it hasn’t increased over the next 24 hours, so they’re feeling fine,” Fields added. “So far, the results seem rather positive.”
Fields also suffered a broken rib and a bruised lung in the crash, his father told USA Today.
