Matt Damon was “overwhelmed” with emotion and cried when he returned to the movies.
The actor admitted he was overwhelmed with feelings when he sat down with guests to preview his new film Stillwater at the Cannes Film Festival, his first screenings since the start of the coronavirus pandemic.
Video from inside the theater showed him and the cast receiving a standing ovation for five minutes as he was moved to see so many people crowded into the theater again.
And later, asking Variety what made him cry, he replied, “the feeling of being in a movie theater again and how much I missed it, and why we are doing this.”

He added: “It was a great reminder that we have to go as a community of aliens and turn off the lights and have this experience together at the same time.
“There is something beautiful and precious about it.
“I just passed myself a little bit at the time because I just hadn’t done this in almost two years. It was great. I was happy. I was just very moved.
Matt previously revealed how he got into the idea of playing the role of an absent father in the film, which follows an unemployed oil rig worker from Oklahoma who moves to France, where his daughter (Abigail Breslin) is in prison.

Speaking of spending time with American thugs to work on his character, he said, “They were suspicious at first because they’re the kind of guy Hollywood movies often look down on.
They would say, “What are your intentions? You say you wanna play [a] thug. What kind of movie are you doing here? ‘
“I think once they saw the script and talked to Tom and I, they realized our intentions were pure and we were really trying to get it right.
And then they couldn’t have been more helpful.
